In
the year 1986, precisely in December begins a ska band called No Doubt,
the culprit of all this was the vocalist John Spence together with
keyboardist Eric Stefani, who forces his sister Gwen to be the Showgirl .
After
several presentations at parties, No Doubt had his first opportunity in
a concert of 14 bands in the Fender 's Ballroom in Long Beach,
California, in the audience was Tony Kanal, who wanted to join the band
despite its little experience.
Finally an enthusiastic Gwen decides to accept. Shortly after Tony Gwen kisses at a party and they hide their relationship to the band. Being a perfectionist organizer, Tony becomes the manager of the group.
The founder of the band, John Spence, committed suicide with a shot in a park in Anaheim. Days
after the band was scheduled to perform at the Roxy in Hollywood, but
then canceled his presentation were still saddened by the death of his
friend.
But take your time and decide to continue, because John had wanted the band to go ahead.
In 1989 the band was completed with the addition of heavy metal guitarist, Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young. After playing their first gig outside of his home state, in front of 100 people Arizona.
In 1991, No Doubt signs a big contract with Interscope Records. Jimmy Iovine, one of the executives at Interscope, predicted that in five years would be a star Gwen. Moreover, the band was eager to play KROQ, local radio.
Between
work and study (Tom is now a graduate in Music, Arts Gwen, Tony and
Adrian in Psychology) the band takes a while to go to Los Angeles to
record their first album, which consists of 14 tracks of old material and some new songs.
In March 1992 the band released their debut album "No Doubt", which sold only 30,000 copies and fails to touch on KROQ. The program director launched the phrase: "It would be a miracle of the Lord to touch the music on the radio." Later the band released the video for "Trapped In A Box" with a $ 5,000 budget, eventually, MTV never happened.
In 1993 the band began recording sessions that then be called Tragic Kingdom. Eric Stefani left the band before finishing Tragic Kingdom and began working as an animator on "The Simpsons".
After
seven years of relationship, Tony becomes claustrophobic and breaks
with Gwen, who still has much to sing and this is how comes the song
"Don 't Speak" after this break.
Shortly
after and in demand for new material by the fans, No Doubt launches
"Beacon Street Collection" which consisted of 10 songs. They sold 1,000 copies in the first two weeks and so far this album has sold 100,000 copies.
In October 1995 he released "Tragic Kingdom", a mixture of ska, new wave, pop, punk and rock. With this record the station KROQ finally heeded and the promotional single "Just a Girl" is requested. Then the band goes on tour with 311.
Several
months after its release, Tragic Kingdom debuts on the Billboard Top
200 at position 175, and the single "Just A Girl" reached # 10. Besides the video of this song debuts eh MTV and the band's success has surprised.
At this time, Gwen knows Rosdale Gavin, lead singer of Bush, which falls soon after. The new couple starts making news gradually.
The
next single, "Spiderwebs," reached # 5 on the Billboard charts, while
the band is on the way to their first European tour, preceded by a tour
that included Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Japan.
In July 1996, "Tragic Kingdom" becomes certified platinum and double platinum soon after. Moreover, Gwen decides to change her hairstyle and the color of his hair, which is quickly copied by teenagers in USA. Thus Gwen becomes the symbol of No Doubt and a queen of pop and idol for girls.
The next single, "Don 't Speak", reached # 2 on the Modern Rock chart and # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Alongside the video is released by MTV. In December 1996, the "Tragic Kingdom" reached No. 1 on Billboard for 14 months of its launch.
Selling
229.000 copies in its first week on top of this ranking, over 500,000
during Christmas week, with a total of 6 million copies sold. The album remain nine weeks at # 1 and then 36 weeks in the top 10.
No
Doubt then attend the American Music Awards where it won the award for
best new artist, the funny thing is that this band had played ten years.
Likewise,
also attended the Grammys in which they were nominated for best rock
album and best new artist, plus they played live. Then, in March 1997 the band celebrated its tenth anniversary.
This
album will continue bringing prizes, and so with "Don 't Speak" won the
award for Best Group Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.
In autumn 1997, No Doubt plays in Europe, India, Singapore and South America. Meanwhile the "Tragic Kingdom" continues to sell massively, reaching 8 million in the U.S. and 14 million worldwide.
Since late 1998 the band began writing songs for their next album in August 1999 and begin recording. By this time, the Tragic Kingdom had already reached the 15 million records sold worldwide.
In
time for remembrance and for the last concert of the club tour, drummer
Adrian Young turned to his girlfriend Nina which thrilled audiences and
the band rocked.
By
the end of 1999, it was ending production of the new album, while the
band was preparing to welcome the new millennium in a mega concert in
Times Square in New York, where they performed their new single,
"Ex-Girlfriend".
In
early 2000 we celebrate the wedding of Adrian and Nina, in which
musicians are invited various friends of the band, including Sugar Ray. Back in February, launches the highly anticipated single "Ex-Girlfriend", on the radio and then I get video.
On April 11, 2000 is released "Return of Saturn", which contains 14 songs with style New Wave, reggae, pop and rock.
This album although it was good and reached platinum success did not reach before. They highlighted the hits "Ex-Girlfriend", "Simple Kind of Life", "New" and "Bathwater".
The
band started working in 2001 in the production of his new album, "Rock
Steady", which was released on December 12 of that year with the
promotional single "Hey Baby", whose video appeared on MTV a few weeks back. This disc swept in sales during its first week and still remains among the 10 best-selling albums in the U.S..
After Return of Saturn, Rock Steady came, which was released the following year, on December 11, 2001. An
album with 13 songs, singles "Hella Good", "Hey Baby" with Bounty
Killer (both with great success and the second award in the Grammy for
Best Pop Song), "Underneath It All" with Lady Saw (for the who took the Grammy in the same category as Hey Baby) and "Running".
The video of the latter, is a summary of everything experienced by the band during its inception in 1992. We made a retrospective in which we see Gwen with 16. This
album is available "Rock Steady Live" DVD with live concert, in which
they sing their new songs and past hits and best songs of the group.
In
2003, No Doubt was removed or at least took a long pause, as there are
rumors of a possible return of the group to the music scene. For this year, No Doubt, released The Singles 1992-2003, a compilation of all the singles released since 1992.
It also includes a "bonus track", "Girls Get Bass In The Back" remix of "Hey Baby". It also has the group's version of the song by Talk Talk: "It's My Life", which had considerable success.
Subsequently
launched Boom Box, a special edition with 2 CDs and 2 DVDs: The Singles
1992-2003 (with all singles), The Videos 1992-2003 (DVD videographic
group), Everything in Time (with all the remixes and other versions of songs from No Doubt) and Live In The Tragic Kingdom (DVD with live concert tour Tragic Kingdom).
